Jigsaw Puzzle in a Vortex: A Collection of Memoirs tells the story of Aurora M. Lewis, a black woman living in America. Aurora traces her family’s genealogy from her great-grandmother to her mother, describing how they lived their lives. She seems to have a special love for her grandmother, whom she fondly calls Muddy. She points out what it was like as a student to live in a country filled with racism. She also points out the sexual harassment she faced as a black woman in her neighborhood and workplace. The author’s poems tell stories with themes of racism, the beauty of the black race, and life generally. Jigsaw Puzzle in a Vortex includes pictures of the author’s family at different times in their lives.
Aurora Lewis uses a first-person point of view and employs simple language. I enjoyed and admired the author’s rich knowledge of her family’s history. The poems tell the story of Aurora and speak about black women. I love how the author highlighted sexual harassment in our world, pointing out that she doubts it will be eradicated in her lifetime. She shows readers the sad experiences she and her people have faced as blacks living in America. This book helps to point out the ills in society and advocate for change. Jigsaw Puzzle in a Vortex is a book that educates, enlightens, and inspires you. Well worth reading.
