Jesus Unbound by Richard Malmed is the story of the most famous man to ever walk the planet (and ascend from it) in the fictional format of a novel. The book reads on the basis of reality and provides an alternate view of all the bits in between what the Bible itself divulges, taking into account the substance of day to day living in the first century AD, and the life and times that all who encountered and followed the Son of God endured. The story contains narrative that is in line with scripture, and dialogue that most certainly is not. Combined, both create a riveting and intelligent story that delicately weaves together fact (to many, fiction to others) and fiction.

I haven't read a book like Jesus Unbound by Richard Malmed before and found the whole story to be completely engrossing and fascinating. Sure, most of us know the story, but to have it told as one that blends all external elements of the time is altogether different. The prose humanizes Jesus and all around him with lines that read in a modern narrative. "Mary Magdalene’s homage to maturity was to fall in love with Jesus, on whom she had first a puppy love crush and now a mature woman’s adoration." While this is characterized as Christian Fiction, I think it will find a wide audience among lovers of historical fiction regardless of faith, as Malmed presents a rational glimpse of the man and the era, from Mother Mary proclaiming that her son needs to get a job, to the confusion, fear, and hope that ensued after the crucifixion and resurrection. You may think you've heard the whole story, but until you've read this, chances are you haven't.

Jesus Unbound is a well-written book that enables the reader to get additional insight into the life of Jesus and how things could have occurred during the time He spend upon earth. There is great historical detail given that allows the reader to quickly become engaged with the material. The chapter Jesus of Nazareth gives some fantastic insights into the deeper calling and purpose of Jesus as He begins to fulfill His ministry. While termed historical fiction, there are some deep, thought-provoking concepts that allow the reader to be stretched within their thinking.

Author Richard D. Malmed gives great details of the events that occur during the time that Jesus was on earth, allowing the reader to feel as though they are directly involved in the story being shared. From the time of Jesus as an early young man until His resurrection, there are great details given. While the historical documentation is very interesting, there are some places in which one might feel that it moves away from the Holy Bible and is just a historical piece, without reference to the main and greatest book ever written about Jesus Christ. The stories concerning Mary and Lazarus seem questionable with some of the information given. However, other parts of the story, while maybe fiction, give some great food for thought concerning how the events could have occurred during that time in history. This wouldn’t be a book for a non-believer, or a young Christian as it could create confusion. It would be a good book for those keen on historical research or some thought provoking stretching concerning the events that occurred within the life of Jesus.
