Janalya by Marie Godley is a young adult fantasy where Janalya learns she has a special power that can control an element of Earth. She attends a special school to further develop her skills as an air elemental. But when the number of other air elementals begins to fall, Janalya goes on a search for the other few of her kind. The story is about her adventure and journey, and the many exciting characters and dangers she meets along her way. One such character is Katsua, a shape-shifting panther. Katsua's race and Janalya are natural enemies, but fate keeps throwing them together. Can they learn to trust each other and look past the widespread hatred of their races? What will Janalya find out about the dwindling number of her kin? What if the truth is so much more than she can handle?
This is a very nicely written fantasy story with strong characterization and description. Janalya is a beautiful character that is strong, courageous, and brave. She wants to do the right thing with every creature that she encounters, even Katsua and his hated race. But she never loses sight of her ultimate challenge, to find other people that are like her so she doesn't have to be alone. The tensions that build between Janalya and Katsua are very nicely written and the reader will enjoy how the two learn to get along with one another and see how their journeys intertwine.
