When Jade’s mother turns out the light and says good-night, Jade’s room becomes very dark. It’s so scary, Jade doesn’t know how she’ll sleep, or, for that matter, get through the night. She wonders what creatures lurk in the shadows, and what might be underneath her bed or climbing the wall behind her. She pulls the covers up to her chin as her imagination goes wild and gets the better of her. But, just as she is at her wit’s end, the moon comes out to dominate the darkened night sky and it shines into her window, chasing away the dark, chasing away all that is scary.
Valdene Mark’s picture book story, Jade Braves the Dark, is a touching story about a little girl and her nightly fears. Written in rhyming verse, this story takes the young reader through the many possible scary things one might find in a darkened room at night. Young readers will certainly relate closely to Jade’s fears and then marvel at what Jade learns when the moonlight finally shines in her window and scares away all that is scary. The plot is well developed, the situation very believable and the illustrations are spectacular. The story is told with care and compassion, showing sensitivity to a child’s fear of the dark and everything that goes bump in the night. It clearly demonstrates that fears can appear to be real, but by being brave, like Jade, anyone can overcome their fears and sleep peacefully through the night. Beautifully told.
