One afternoon Jack went out to play. His mom had asked him to because in the morning he had spent a lot of time working on his computer. The problem is that when Jack went out, he didn't know what to do and none of his friends was available to play with him. Later, when he was able to chat with his friends, they offered to show him their hobbies so that he could find an activity he might enjoy. That's how Jack began to try many new things. He learned that his friends' tastes could be very different from his own and that was okay because we are all different. Fortunately, he managed to find a hobby that was perfect for him. In Jack Finds a Hobby: A Tale of Friendship and Self-discovery, Shirley Bradley teaches kids several options for entertaining themselves when they are alone.
I liked the message of friendship because the bond between Jack and his friends was seen throughout. The book has a very original and creative style. It was good to see how Shirley Bradley approached the situation because this theme is becoming more and more common with children. Now that they spend more time on the computer, they may forget that there is a whole world of possible activities available. Jack Finds a Hobby is perfect for talking to children about these situations and giving them suggestions for productive hobbies. The story is enjoyable and the atmosphere very friendly. The character design is original and a lot of things happen in the story that children can relate to.
