It's All About the Face: Quilted Fabric Portraits by Phyllis Cullen and Cindy Richard is a handy manual that gives the step-by-step process of introducing art students to portraiture, which is a difficult topic, and showing the representation of the human face and figure. Everyone is attracted to human and animal faces and to an artist the human figure represents the epitome of challenge and satisfaction. Art quilts have a three-dimensional quality and this book is a good way for readers to understand the highlights of the portrait process and also the complex and intricate process of creating quilted fabric portraits.
There are not many books in the market about how to quilt a fabric portrait and this book by Phyllis Cullen and Cindy Richard will be a boon to both experienced and novice quilters. It's All About the Face gives wonderful details and explanations on how to go about it, making it easy for readers who are interested in trying out quilted fabric portraits. There are tips on what types of fabrics to choose, the colors that can be used, the texture and pattern choices, layering techniques, actual quilting of a portrait, and a lot of examples with the techniques and strategies explained so that readers who enjoy quilting or want to try quilting will benefit from them. The book also describes extensively and methodically how to emphasize the anatomical contours and bone structure and will guide readers through the entire process. The book gives readers details about the historical evolution of portraiture, its myriad styles and genres with the current styles adopted by the current fabric artists of today. I am sure, like me, readers will be looking forward to Book Two.
