Warm and breezy, It's About Luke by Gwenyth Snow is a biographical fiction story that examines the reality of family, love, friendship, and humanity. Set in Edmonton, the story follows an ordinary young boy, nine-year-old Luke Poole, whose life vacillates between the doldrums of everyday life and the excitement of the fringe world of his disabled, elder brother. The two brothers do exciting and wild things, some with unexpected consequences. Luke doesn’t feel that close to his mother, often feeling pushed aside and neglected as his mom stays focused on putting her life together. But everything changes when tragedy hits home. Now, young Luke has a powerful revelation of his worth and a deep sense of family.

Love, family, and adventure are among the themes woven into this mesmerizing narrative. It’s a fun read that is full of love and tears. The writing is beautiful, filled with insightful passages and emotionally charged moments. I was moved and hooked by the first lines of the story, lines that promised a tale full of warmth and love, but that hinted at the theme of solitude: “No one should be too old for the comfort and security of a stuffed animal, even when no longer a child.” Gwenyth Snow allows readers to plunge into the depths of the psychology of the characters and the author demonstrates a keen understanding of the world of children. It's About Luke is a tale that will remind readers of the child they once were, of the fears and dreams that inhabited their hearts. It's deeply moving and permeated with a fine sense of humanity. I loved every bit of this story.
