Island Eight is a work of fiction in the fantasy subgenre and it serves as the first installment of the Ataraxia Series. It is best suited to the general adult reading audience and was penned by M.Z. Medenciy. The story follows the protagonist Sophia, an entertainer who has spent her life casually ignoring the tyranny around her to make the best of it and live a happy life. But when that behavior begins to affect her town and herself directly, Sophia’s life is suddenly endangered. Rescued by a stranger and taken far from home, Sophia must discover what she’s made of to survive the impending war.
I read a lot of fantasy fiction, and one of the features that I loved about this work was the unique ways in which typical fantasy elements like fae people, gods, and the magic system were utilized in fresh and inventive ways. There was something very slick and modern about the mysterious fae who appear throughout this work, and Sophia makes a perfect foil to discover them when she is ripped from her typical life and thrown in right at the deep end. For a lengthy work, the plot moves swiftly and feeds a lot of the essential backstory directly into the relevant plot, so you learn about the lore, the king, the war, and the magic system naturally as Sophia learns. I would recommend Island Eight by M.Z. Medenciy as a highly enjoyable fantasy adventure with well-written characters and original ideas.
