Everyone has fears, doubts or feels alone at one time or another. Isecas The Dream Cat And The New School helps Sahar overcome issues that can affect her self-esteem and her future. She is in a new place, learning a new language and feels so alone. This is something she experiences every day and she is not the only one; children all over the world go through the same experience. Children need healthy ways to deal with these issues.
I love how author Preston Squire and illustrator Dixie Albanez use Isecas The Dream Cat to outline how our childhood can affect our self-esteem. If the information that we receive and perceive as children is not channeled properly, it could cause low self-esteem and other issues well into adulthood. Children need to be able to seek a trusted adult to help them through these types of issues.
Children need to be guided through the process of dissecting what are good and bad choices, and the ability to discern and use wisdom in exercising those decisions. How they do this is through adults. Adults need to make sure that they are tapped into the children in their care and stay connected with them. If an adult is connected and has a trusting relationship with a child, then if something is wrong the adult can either sense it or the child will feel comfortable enough to convey the issue to the adult.
Additionally, I love the beautiful illustrations and rich colors that Ms. Albanez uses to tell the story of Isecas The Dream Cat. Squire and Albanez work so well together in helping our children to believe in themselves.
