Intestinal Fortitude: A Memoir by Earl Llewellyn Goldmann is a brutally honest memoir in which Earl takes the reader through every painful and joy-filled moment of his life. Earl shares the most poignant events, from growing up, falling in love with basketball, and so much more. Growing up in a small town on the Oregon Coast was not easy. Living with trauma, fighting alcoholism, overcoming injuries, and then finding his footing were the biggest hurdles in his way. While tragedies and struggles were constants in his life, hope was the fire that remained ignited in Earl’s heart. With that hope, Earl fought every tragedy, emotional turmoil, and upheaval in his life.
Earl Llewellyn Goldmann lived a full life filled with tragedies, difficulties, and mistakes but also with positivity, understanding, and becoming better. You can tell that the author put his heart and soul into Intestinal Fortitude and how it must have hurt him to recount some of the incidents in his life. I could understand how an unhappy marriage and the consequences of it on his mental health was a difficult time for him. However, basketball was one source of happiness and respite from his desperate life. The narrative is effective, positive, revealing, and engaging. I felt as if I was sitting in front of Earl and listening to him retell his life stories. The book isn’t written in chronological order but instead focuses on how significant an event was for Earl. The pictures made it easy for me to imagine what was happening and see myself in his shoes. I thoroughly enjoyed it!
