In Intertwined: One Baby, Two Couples, Sovereign God by Karen Lynn Sytsma, an event that could have been divisive results in the creation of a lasting friendship and the establishment of God’s will in the lives of the couples involved. The journey to becoming foster and later adoptive parents for Kim and Ryan Traxinger began after their third biological child, Oliver, was born. Owen joined the Traxingers as their fourth child. The couple kept their door open for the possibility of a second adoption and the opportunity came when they were contacted by a caseworker about a baby girl who had been taken into protective custody. After praying about the matter, Kim and Ryan decided to welcome baby Opal into their home with the hope of becoming her adoptive parents. Meanwhile, Elizabeth and Russ Jenks had been picked by Opal’s mother to be her adoptive parents.
Intertwined begins by offering the couples’ backgrounds, how they grew up and how they met. This gives the story a foundation and provides insight into their lives before the incidents surrounding Opal’s adoption. The Traxinger and Jenks families' experiences show the value of involving God in everything, allowing the establishment of his will and allowing for reconciliation and love instead of strife and bitterness. Within the story, the narrative is paused at intervals to draw out significant lessons that can be learned from the accounts. A book about submitting to God’s will even when things do not go as planned and allowing for God’s redemption, Intertwined by Karen Lynn Sytsma is an amazing story that carries life-changing lessons.
