“All minds opening in love know each other.” I didn’t realize how much my first pet meant to me until he succumbed to cancer. He was my heart dog and the pain of losing him was unbearable. He taught me so much about love, especially unconditional love, and he was a powerful constant in my daily life. When he passed away, I wrote about the experience; it helped ease the pain. But, even now, thirteen years later, with another beloved pet in the family, the loss is still strong.
I wish I'd had Paul Gorman’s chapbook, Infinite Healing: Poems and Messages for the Loss of Your Animal Companion when I faced my first painful loss. His words, told in rhyming verse and with compelling sentiment, would have helped ease my sorrow, perhaps as much as writing about my pet did at the time. His gentle words speak volumes about the love one feels for their pet. In fact, pets teach us how to love – completely and absolutely: “our time was to reach/ what I will keep/ love for me/ and what pure love means.” Life and the life we’ll live beyond this life, is timeless.
The poet provides many profound thoughts to consider, complete with quotes from others to support his belief that there is a oneness between ourselves and our fur babies, a oneness that will never end. This book is a real treasure and will have animal lovers weeping again for the loss of their best friends, but weeping in a good way, knowing that these wonderful fur babies will be with us forever in our hearts and throughout eternity in the life hereafter. Loved it! Sublime thoughts.
