In Incalculable: The Rousing of Mia by Whovina Munroe, Mia Summers moved to the small town of Gordonsville for a fresh start, trying to overcome the loss of her parents and her best friend. It’s certainly not easy, especially when she suffers from terrifying recurring nightmares. Her life seems to take a wonderful turn when she meets Christopher. Despite her hesitance to trust him, his charm wins her heart and they become a couple. Enjoying her new romance, she suddenly wakes up one morning and finds herself in a twist of reality. She’s not in Gordonsville and Christopher doesn’t exist. Is it all in her mind or is there a sinister deed behind it?
The debut for the Incalculable series, the premise of The Rousing of Mia is no doubt intriguing and Whovina Munroe gives several good suspenseful, bone-chilling moments that will keep readers on the edge of their seats. I had fun trying to read into any clues or red herrings to solve the mystery. Even though some scene transitions are unexpected and slightly puzzling, the plot is well-paced and the prose is clear cut, making way for a smooth narrative. Characterization is solid; Mia and Chris are easy to root for. On the other hand, I hope there’ll be more development for Rikki's character in the series as her story also gives substantial weight to the plot. I look forward to reading the continuation of the story in the sequel, Incalculable: Saving Sophie. All in all, this is a quick, entertaining read from Munroe.
