Inassea Chronicles: The Blighted Flame by P.A. Pena is an epic fantasy following Virgil Truesdale as he hunts down the witch responsible for his father’s death. Under the guidance of a nymph named Orlando, Virgil reluctantly ventures to Akata Island and joins the Crusader's Exam. The games are ruthless and deadly, pitting a group of talented sorcerers against one another. Dragons, demons, elves, witches, and humans with unique powers fill the battlefields as they scale through the ranks to become upper-level crusaders. Chaos breaks out, halting the games once the infamous Scarlet Mage and witch Cecelia Holland infiltrate the Island in search of a magical weapon. It is up to Virgil and the small group of Crusader recruits to defeat the evil Nobodys, save themselves, and capture the witch.
P.A. Pena has a descriptive writing style that brings the characters to life. Every detail, from their clothing to how they carry themselves, is expertly laid out for the reader. The battle scenes are intense and full of heart-pounding action. P.A. Pena’s character building is top-notch for the Crusaders and royalty. There is a mystery surrounding the character of Cecelia Holland which the reader must piece together as the story progresses. I was happily surprised by the inclusion of a demon in the ranks of the Crusaders. The blending of character types is unique, putting a thin line between the traditional good and evil personas. The Crusader's Exam was my favorite portion of the story. Virgil Truesdale has gained the camaraderie of fellow Crusaders, the resources of the Royals, and the know-how to succeed in his quest for revenge. Inassea Chronicles: The Blighted Flame sets the stage for an adventure series similar to The Hunger Games with a hint of Harry Potter. This book will be a page-turner in the young adult and fantasy genres.
