In$ured to the Hilt: A John Smith Mystery is a work of fiction in the murder mystery, suspense, and interpersonal drama subgenres. Best suited to the general adult reading audience, it was penned by author Charlotte Stuart. In this compelling mystery drama filled with sudden twists, unexpected turns, and plenty of wry humor, we find ourselves following John Smith, an insurance claims adjuster with a passion for investigative crime, who finds a case falling at his feet when a claim of permanent injury turns deadly. As murderous intent rises all around him, John must rely on friends, family, fellow sleuths, and investigators to help him reach the truth.
Author Charlotte Stuart has crafted a fantastically intricate yet easy-to-read cozy mystery that has highs and lows in all the right places. One of the features of this novel that I enjoyed immensely was the balance of hard-boiled detective plotting versus the cozy, character-led drama and the subtle blend of wit and dry humor that ties the whole thing together. The ensemble cast was well-crafted to showcase a wide variety of personality types and different skill sets that contributed to John’s investigative journey, and I really especially enjoyed the dialogue presentation and attitude of Heloise. Stuart has a great sense of timing to produce a well-paced mystery that gives us plenty to go on without ever spoon-feeding the answers to her readers. Overall, I would certainly recommend In$ured to the Hilt to fans of well-penned mysteries that leave no stone unturned.
