Kirk is murdered very early in the plot and then the mystery of In the Red by Dina Santorelli begins. Is Marty the killer or the innocent guy just caught in the wrong place at the wrong time? Recently separated, Muriel finds love with Marty and wants to believe he is not the killer. Will Detective Munson find the right person quickly and start her days of retirement? The cub reporter, Parker, cannot be ignored as we wonder if his snooping will help or hurt the case. Likewise, Roxanne, Muriel’s best friend, cannot be ignored as she also does some investigating on her own.
In the Red is indeed a murder mystery thriller from the beginning until the ending that you will never see coming. I immediately felt as though I was transported to a town in Long Island; any town. The dialog and the characters are very real and mostly likable. There were several main characters and a bunch of minor characters and all of them played a strategic part in the story. There are several plots and as many times as I thought I had the answer, I had to change my mind and in the end, I wasn't even close. In the Red is a very well written book by Dina Santorelli. I really believe that this would make a great TV movie with a chance at follow-up stories. If you enjoy reading a good mystery then this is a must-read because it meets all the criteria of murder mysteries - suspense, twists, turns, and just plain good writing. I highly recommend reading In the Red; you will not be disappointed.
