In The Mirror by Fabian Ferguson is an impactful and educative children’s coming-of-age book that encourages imagination and a positive self-image. Two children marvel at what they see when they look into the mirror. They notice their beauty and the shine on their brows when the sun shines on them. The story matches each part of the body with a specific talent or capacity: the eyes represent vision and their twinkle dreams that should be chased; the mind is a picture of brilliance, imagination, and a hunger to learn. The children in the illustrations are seen engaging in different exciting, educative activities such as sports, singing, and drawing.
In The Mirror contains important, encouraging lessons. It inspires children to dream, to recognize the power in the voice and use it for good, and to learn from failure, and to move forward. I liked that the book is also honest in its approach as it acknowledges that things may not always turn out as expected such as when it shows the characters blushing when they receive a discouraging test score. The lines employ end-rhymes which help in recalling new words for young readers and they also create rhythm. The illustrations are creative and useful. They emphasize and explain each element contained in the text. For instance, when explaining the nose - a representation of greatness that can be felt now - the accompanying illustrations offer options that greatness can include achievement in sports, painting, and more. In The Mirror by Fabian Ferguson is a lovely read for children and contains uplifting lessons on body image and achieving dreams.
