My Brother’s Keeper is the first book in the series In The Care Of Wolves, a young adult thriller novel penned by author S. S. Bazinet. Catapulting the werewolf transformation genre into the modern age, we meet sixteen-year-old Theodore many years after his abduction by the mysterious WKA organization. When his real family finally gets him back, Theo is full of dangerous powers that he himself doesn’t fully understand. The WKA is in hot pursuit to recover the boy as a weapon for themselves, but family is far more important to Theo, if only he can stop himself harming them all.
Psychological, atmospheric, mysterious and fun, this is a true thriller read for teens and upwards that takes an old horror genre and gives it an inventive new spin. Far from the realms of fantasy, the plot is lightly dusted with science fiction to give plenty of backstory, but keep the action and adventure elements at the forefront. Theodore is a well-developed central lead whom readers can empathize with, cursed with powers he didn’t ask for and learning how to harness them for his own gain and safety. The narrative element of handling the main character who is slightly out of control was masterfully done by author S. S. Bazinet, whose flair for sentence structuring paces out the most thrilling moments in a highly readable and engaging way. Overall, I thoroughly enjoyed My Brother’s Keeper and found to be a thrilling start to a brave new series.
