In Shadows is a collection of poetry written by Jason Leonard which covers deeply emotional issues such as love and betrayal. Everyday subjects are examined closely. I felt the disillusionment the author had towards love in Behind Me is Love, as well as a host of other emotions as the book moved along. A huge aspect of poetry is the visual component. From the start of the book with the cover, you see that this is going to be deep. Prose writers can only craft in paragraphs; poets have much more freedom with the structure of their poems. While the structure remained relatively similar the entire book, it still made a difference.
Poetry is very much a personal read. While there were many poems that didn't resonate with me, I'm sure they are deeply personal to the author and could resonate with countless other readers. That is the beautiful and yet frustrating thing about poetry. I felt that most of the poems were simplistic and covered rather banal subjects, yet to another reader, the very same passages may have uncovered mysteries and revelations. I may never know. Still, Jason Leonard's work is well written and there were no obvious syntax or spelling errors, which I liked. I also liked how his poems seemed to flow with such fluidity. I enjoy that kind of rhythm in my poetry and it was a quality that stuck in my mind while reading. In Shadows is a very deeply personal read that may sit very well with potential readers.
