In Chadwick’s Eyes by Rae Yung tells the story of a young boy who moved to a place called Chesterbay when he was six years old. It’s the year his father tells him he’s going to teach him to become a man of many faces. Chadwick doesn’t quite understand what his dad means because he thinks his mom teaches him enough, but this is his father so he goes along with it. When he turns ten, he loses his mother. His mother died on his birthday, which was a day that had been bad from the very beginning. When he got home from school his grandmother was there and that was when she told him about the accident and how his mom didn’t make it. Soon afterward he found his father's lab where there was a robot in the image of his mother. Not sure what was going on, Chadwick needed to get to the bottom of what was happening.

I thought In Chadwick’s Eyes by Rae Yung was a very unique and interesting read. The main character Chadwick is relatable and a child you could easily like. The storyline itself had a sad yet sci-fi feel to it. We learn that he loses his mother when he’s ten, but at the same time, there are strange things happening that make the young boy believe that his mother is a robot. There’s a bit of mystery to it as well which I think kids will pick up on and enjoy. The illustrations are beautifully done and go along with the storyline perfectly. It’s a book I would recommend others to read.

Rae Yung has crafted an absolutely singular storyline with In Chadwick's Eyes. Where Yung's writing provides for a detailed accounting, Zuke Llogs creates an exquisitely creepy visual perspective in a powerful palette of black and white, enhanced only by jabs of primary color, and even then only one assigned to any given character. Every sketched illustration contains the seemingly conspiratorial staging of a grid: the tile floors, a four-panel window behind Chadwick's mother, the not-quite-straight steps, and the gymnasium floor. The framework is engineered to encapsulate Yung's surprising ending—one which a reader would be truly missing out on if they passed over this creative little book.

Things are not always what they seem to be in young Chadwick's life. In Chadwick's Eyes by Rae Yung is about life, fantasy, and the journey that Chadwick experiences every day, from the love of his parents to the Bully Brothers. One day everything changes and new things are discovered when Chadwick's mother dies. As your child begins to see through the eyes of Chadwick, with the beautiful illustrations by Zuke Llogs, they will discover that not only is his life full of hidden secrets but these secrets offer him excellent benefits for his future. Children will learn that they too have what it takes within themselves to deal with each challenge that life offers as Chadwick suddenly discovers about himself one day.

I enjoyed this story due to its beautiful storyline coupled with the illustrations. This book told of the different ways that children discover things about themselves and their surroundings. Once Chadwick found his dad's secret lab, he knew that things would never be the same and a whole new world opened up to him. Children will enjoy reading this book and seeing the great adventures through Chadwick's eyes that can be beneficial for their own lives, from dealing with bullies and death to parents' love. After reading this book your child will also see things differently as Chadwick did after his great discovery. 'Outside the window, the world looked different. The sun was brighter, the grass was greener, the sky was bluer, the birds sang louder. I’m fixed now! I’m not afraid of the Bully Brothers anymore. With these powers, I can do anything.' In Chadwick's Eyes by Rae Yung is a highly recommended book for your child.
