In A Flash: A Memoir by R.J. Castille is a captivating story, a memoir about medical malpractice, romance in the midst of harrowing challenges, and a gritty journey towards healing after a tragic loss. It took just one little procedure and Renee Johnson’s life was changed in a flash. A tale with powerful medical implications that pulls the reader into the tragedy and loss a woman never bargained for. The narrative begins with the intriguing, mind-boggling words that make the reader want to know what happened: “They call it routine; they say it's safe. Does anyone ever stop to question that? Of course not, they are professionals after all. Until it happened to me, I would never have thought to question them either." In a voice that is clear and steady, and a style that is inimitable, R.J. Castille exposes the emotional turmoil she experienced after a very painful event.
The writing is focused, capturing strong emotions, and is deeply moving. It takes a lot of courage to share one’s brokenness and vulnerability with readers and this author has done just that. While the narrative is emotionally engaging and thought-provoking, it is a powerful statement against medical malpractice and a story that encourages readers to learn to make responsible and informed choices when it comes to their health and that of their loved ones. The book has strong psychological hints; it is poignant, at times disturbing, but it is filled with the insight that readers will appreciate. In A Flash: A Memoir is a beautiful gift that will inform readers — especially female ones — and give them insight on what to do when it comes to making medical choices. This book will rouse all kinds of emotions in a reader and keep them rooting for the author.
