Stories – we all have them. There are stories about family, friends, ancestors, acquaintances, interesting and unusual events in our lives. And these stories are what make us who we are. The generations before us spent time together sharing stories; that’s how we learned our family history, who we were and where we came from. There were the “remember when…” stories and the “when I was your age...” stories. Sometimes we listened to our elders and we relished their storytelling ability – like the father whose childhood as a Boy Scout had him walking on quicksand and falling into snake holes or the revelation in a family tree search that perhaps there were too many skeletons in the closet, like ancestors who owned slaves.
Daphne Tarango’s Imprints: A Collection of Family Stories, Legends, and Revelations is a collection of family stories told in the classic narrative storytelling voice as well as some stories shared in poetry. The stories reflect a group of creative nonfiction writers seeking to share their special family stories, to write them down before they are forgotten forever. These stories made imprints on the authors' memories, on their lives, and became an important part of who they are today. Each story is told with care and compassion, reflecting on the provenance of the story and the power of the original telling. We all have stories to share; writing them down is one way to preserve them for eternity. This is a wonderful collection of treasured stories and poems, some accompanied by interesting photographs of the characters found in the stories.
