The gods have tried for many thousands of years to create a human species that will not turn violent, corrupt, and eventually destroy the planet they live on. This time the planet happens to be earth and the gods have decided to try one last time. Sawyer was created by Gaea and through her, a new bloodline has come into being. Of her four children, Simon the eldest is much more than anyone expected. During the weekend of his 22nd birthday when his powers are sung in and the family celebrates, the Alliance kidnaps Hannah, one of his younger twin sisters. As war is about to break loose on the driveway of Sawyer’s family estate, Taya appears through a doorway. She quickly takes care of the threat and takes Simon and his family to a new realm where she reveals to him what he is, the purpose he is to fulfill, and the role his family will play in this as well.
Shawna Bennett has taken a very current topic relevant to all ages and written a book that is interesting, vocal, and a whole lot more. Like many YA books, Immortal Blood promises to take the reader on Simon’s journey to who he is and what his role in life will be. What we then get is a story of mankind’s origin and how it all ties in with the wrecking effect man has on the world. Bennett's novel is filled with the minimum amount of violence and characters who really think before they act and question the goal of all their actions. If you think you are getting a book that once again deals with one aspect of a greater story you will be surprised. Bennett fills this book with so much that it feels much longer than the three hundred and some pages it really is. This is not your average YA book, and the chosen theme of our destruction of earth makes it a powerful read.
