Image is Everything is a short novella by Dominique Wilkins. Robin has always wanted to rise above her meagre existence and live a life of luxury. When she meets Jeff, those dreams turn into reality. However, Jeff is not an upstanding citizen. He is arrested and charged with dealing drugs. While in jail, Jeff saves the life of another inmate and that man becomes indebted to him, allowing Jeff to fulfill the web of lies Robin wove while he was incarcerated. In the meantime, their son, Cameron, is dealing with struggles of his own as he strives to live up to the expectations of his parents. Due to a premature birth, Cameron is a bit slower than his other classmates. Much like his father, he saves the life of a kid at school who agrees to help Cameron cheat on his college exams. With all these carefully laid lies, how long is it before they start to unravel?

Miss Wilkins pieces together a simple story about people who want more than they can afford. It is a dream of many people in the world, but in this novella, the characters go beyond normal wishing. I could see why Robin did what she did to make her image appear more than it was. She grew up in poverty. I did not really like her character, though, because she was selfish. It was tragic that it took something like a death to snap her back to reality. I felt the story was slightly too short. Wilkins could have built up the characters and descriptions for a greater impact on the reader. Overall, though, Image is Everything is a good read.
