I’m NOT Like Other Books by Meaghan Axel is not like any other book but has something for everyone. This metafiction picture book has a sloth, a narwhal, and a seal that serve as guides as they try to determine what this book’s purpose is. The book itself addresses the reader directly by clearly stating on each page what it is not. Interestingly, every time the book declares what it is not, it sneakily shows up in this book. This book would never make you say silly words like Boomshakalakawoohoo! Our three guides provide insight and jokes throughout the narrative; some will make you think, and some will make you laugh out loud. So, what is this book’s purpose? You will have to read it to find out.
Meaghan Axel has written a delightfully clever book that both kids and adults will appreciate. She has included all the popular genres in kids' books today, from alphabet books to potty humor to unicorns and rainbows! The illustrations by Zoe Mellors are engaging and full of fun details. This will be a perennial storytime favorite for librarians and teachers. Axel and Mellors make a great team. Each spread is cleverly written and illustrated. It contains so much subtle and not so subtle humor you will notice something different each time you read it. I laughed out loud at the rhyming joke shared by the sloth and the narwhal. I’m NOT Like Other Books is a fun, rollicking romp through children’s literature. Kids and adults will want to read I’m NOT Like Other Books repeatedly!
