Spirians are a race derived from the mating of Angels and Fae. Similar to humans in appearance, Spirians vibrate with the frequency of Angels and have the gifts of the Fae. Their enemy is the Shadows or dark Spirians. Having read Rowena Portch’s previous work, Aeneas: A Spirian Short Adventure, I was eager to read Illusions, Book 5 of the Spirian Saga series. I did have my concerns as this is already volume five of the saga – I expected a slight confusion on my part as a reader. However, my concerns were unfounded as Illusions is a stand-alone story. Ian and Erika have a great friendship; one that can only lead to love and Ian is determine to make her his mate. But Erika is pursued by another suitor, Jazen. He has better blood and status in his clan, unlike Ian.
I rooted for Ian instantly. He is not from a high status family like Erika, so he has to prove his worth to her. Yet, Jazen, Ian’s rival, is not necessarily a bad person although readers would not find him likable at all at first. Ian and Erika’s dilemma is not the only plot in Illusions. There’s also Drew and Elle. Still pining for her dead mate, Avel, Elle is in a quandary and not ready to accept Drew’s love. On top of that, there are adrenaline-pumping battles between the Spirians and the Shadows. The prose is straightforward yet has a good flair at the same time. The narration is done from different characters’ perspectives, thus enabling readers to substantially connect to each of them. Illusions is an absolute joy to read, one that I’m more than happy to recommend to my fellow readers.
