Spirians are a race derived from the mating of Angels and Fae. Similar to humans in appearance, Spirians vibrate with the frequency of Angels and have the gifts of the Fae. Their enemy is the Shadows or dark Spirians. Having read Rowena Portch’s previous work, Aeneas: A Spirian Short Adventure, I was eager to read Illusions, Book 5 of the Spirian Saga series. I did have my concerns as this is already volume five of the saga – I expected a slight confusion on my part as a reader. However, my concerns were unfounded as Illusions is a stand-alone story. Ian and Erika have a great friendship; one that can only lead to love and Ian is determine to make her his mate. But Erika is pursued by another suitor, Jazen. He has better blood and status in his clan, unlike Ian.

I rooted for Ian instantly. He is not from a high status family like Erika, so he has to prove his worth to her. Yet, Jazen, Ian’s rival, is not necessarily a bad person although readers would not find him likable at all at first. Ian and Erika’s dilemma is not the only plot in Illusions. There’s also Drew and Elle. Still pining for her dead mate, Avel, Elle is in a quandary and not ready to accept Drew’s love. On top of that, there are adrenaline-pumping battles between the Spirians and the Shadows. The prose is straightforward yet has a good flair at the same time. The narration is done from different characters’ perspectives, thus enabling readers to substantially connect to each of them. Illusions is an absolute joy to read, one that I’m more than happy to recommend to my fellow readers.

"Illusions" by Rowena Portch is a fantasy novel and part of the 'Spirian Saga series' (book 5). However, the book reads well as a standalone although there will be added richness if you follow the saga. The Spirians are a race of humans with special powers and live in clans. They can communicate and work with the Angels. Opposed to them are the Shadows, who are dark Spirians and in this story they join forces with the fallen angels to form a very powerful enemy. The barriers between the dimensions - the different realms of physical and spiritual - are torn and the Spirians and humanity are at risk. The Spirians prepare to do battle but as Archangel Raphael warns, “Battles are never won ... only fought.” There is quite an air of tension and almost despair at the beginning of the story. Various characters face personal challenges alongside the greater threat. For example, Ian faces a rival in love and Drew gives his reluctant would-be mate Elle an ultimatum. There are a lot of issues to be worked through on many levels.

There is a large cast of characters in the book from the various clans, including the Shadows. They are interesting and gifted but very realistic and modern. However, just occasionally I got a little confused as to who was who, especially as most of the figures we meet have non-traditional names. We have a number of different narrators for this story and the changing viewpoint works very well. It keeps the reader nicely on their toes. It is a very imaginative and tightly structured book that makes for an extremely exciting read.
