In life we get several chances to make our poor decisions right. Life is about our choices and the decisions that are made with each situation. In If I Could: A Son’s Plea by T.K. Ware, David was an intelligent young man but he was always getting into trouble. The trouble primarily came from peer pressure. At an early age, David became the man of the house because his father had abandoned them. Immediately he began to experience a daily routine that he dreaded. Every morning his mom would slap his face as if it was her alarm clock and made David responsible to seeing that his little brother Sammy got to school. When he arrived at school, he was pressured by the Celantos gang who tried to initiate him into the fold. He did not have a father to teach him about how to deal with the pressures of life so he continued to make unwise decisions. From his family life to the peer pressure at school, on a daily basis David felt like he was stuck in a rut. One day David’s life changed when his mom realized that she was unable to continue supporting the family and they had to relocate to his grandmother’s house.
I loved If I Could: A Son’s Plea by T.K. Ware because it shows that with God all things are possible; it’s just a matter of creating a paradigm shift in our thoughts. David had to begin to embrace his new surroundings which were built upon the faith of God. Initially he rebelled, but discovered that in his new environment he had to channel his thoughts differently to make better decisions. David would continually hear the warning of his grandmother, “Don’t allow peer pressure to lead you down a dangerous path,” which was echoed throughout the story from others. We all need someone that cares and to be our conscience during the storms of life. If you are looking for an uplifting and inspiring short story, If I Could: A Son’s Plea by T.K. Ware is ideal.
