I Soy Latino: Second Generation Bilinguification by Gabriel Archangel Irizarry III is a book that extols the culture of Latin Americans. It uses the instrument of spoken word poetry to demonstrate what binds people - their values, experiences, and challenges. It also shows the synergy between Americans and Latin Americans. The poems are written in enjambment form. They show patriotism and discuss the value systems that have held us together as people. These values include family, love, pride, and many others. Other poems tell stories of people and their conversations. These are written in a mixture of English and Spanish and are accompanied by pictures that underpin their contents.
One striking thing about I Soy Latino is the beautiful color backgrounds used on all its pages. Explanations are given for the keywords used, which provides an understanding of and context to what is being presented. The mixture of Spanish and English can be a great source of learning for those who wish to become bilingual or learn a foreign language. The poems contain wise sayings and teach profound lessons, particularly on life in general, relationships between people, friendships, and one’s love life. Above all, Gabriel A. Irizarry teaches and inspires us to be proud of our heritage and absorb the spirit of patriotism and nationalism. The pictures that complement the poems are testaments to this fact. I recommend this work to people with a rich knowledge and understanding of both English and Spanish.
