I Made a Promise for Gun Safety!, written by Jennifer Gazdick and illustrated by Randi Fultz, is a highly informative book that teaches children why and how to be safe around guns. Readers are catapulted into the life of our young female protagonist, who also learns about guns for the first time. On one of her visits to her grandparents' home, she meets her grandfather in the basement, where he’s got several hunting trophies. Her grandfather teaches her about guns that he uses in hunting and the right ways to use a gun. Our protagonist immediately makes a promise for gun safety, and something happens next. The story is well-crafted, with clarity and meaning while addressing the critical social issue of using guns. The pace is appropriate for a children's book, allowing young readers to absorb the lessons without feeling rushed.
In a society ravaged by gun violence and deaths, even in schools, I believe I Made a Promise for Gun Safety! is a huge stride in the right direction. Jennifer Gazdick rightly informs children about gun safety, properly breaking down terms with appropriate words and pictures. The book answers likely questions any child would have about guns. One thing I like about this book is that it encourages conversations about gun safety and management among all groups of people (parents and children, children and their peers, etc.). I also like the section that talks about where to keep guns and bullets. Children will learn a lot about safety, consideration for others, and the responsible handling of guns. The themes of safety and responsibility resonate strongly, making it an impactful read that balances education or information with engagement. This book is effective in conveying its message while remaining accessible to children.
