I Love You For You by Heather Lester is a delightful storybook that celebrates the concept of being different from each other yet liking each other for what they are meant to be. Children need not be the same as their parents, but that does not mean parents do not love their children. The storybook shows children being different from their parents. The mother likes to wake up early while the little boy likes to sleep late. The little girl likes bright outfits and the mother likes a basic style, yet her daughter’s outfits make her smile. The father likes to be on the ground, but the little girl likes to play in trees. The little girl likes messy art and the mother likes to paint things neatly. Though they are different, they like to be together and enjoy life together.
The author’s approach to a relevant topic is unique and refreshing and can be related to by parents and children everywhere. I like the way Heather Lester has shown the differences between children and their parents, yet they listen to each other and find joy in being together. The illustrations are adorable and they help children understand the concept easily and clearly. The book is also about accepting each other despite the differences. It is a good book for storytelling sessions in homes and tutors and educators can use it in classrooms to help children understand how important it is to accept people for what they are yet enjoy their company. ‘You be who you are meant to be’ is an important message to everyone and the author conveys it effectively through her words and illustrations.
