I Jonathan: A Charleston Tale of the Rebellion by George WB Scott is a charmingly told tale that takes the main character on a series of surprising adventures, starting off with Jonathan being stuck in a new city, far from home, and culminating after years of experiences change and mature him. The story is told from the memories of the real-life Jonathan as he relays them to a family member late in his life. This added detail makes the story feel real and helps bring the main character to life. Packed full of incredibly detailed wartime facts, insights, and vibrant descriptions, I Jonathan is a story that plays out like a film, pulling the reader along gently as the characters encounter a vast array of triumphs, fears, and poignant happenstances interspersed among the little moments of daily life. By the end of the book, the reader will feel they have been transported back in time and will be reluctant to see the story end.
I appreciated the steady pacing, writing style, and author’s voice throughout I Jonathan by George WB Scott. It is clear the author is well-armed with historically accurate details and a deep understanding of the many dynamics that were occurring in the South during that era. He writes with delicacy when the subject is sensitive and offers a tone that advocates for peace while staying true to the reality of living during that time. The author paints a beautifully detailed and vivid picture of life, including battles and their impact, with an experienced hand. Each element of this story will endear the main character to the reader, providing a pleasant read that is excellently written. I Jonathan is an example of truly great writing!
