Many people struggle with their mental and emotional health. Carrie Vanderbilt helps readers understand their emotions in I Don’t Know Why I Act Like This: How to Uncover the Relationship Between Your Mental Health and Your Emotions. This self-help book contains information, suggestions, and activities to apply your new knowledge. Carrie helps the reader learn what makes them tick and how to handle emotions before they handle you. To quote Socrates: “Know thyself.” Emotions are extremely complicated. While dealing with emotions, we need to learn to eliminate the term “should” and realize that feelings are normal. Any change can trigger an emotional response, so changes need to be made in small steps. Most people think of emotions only kicking into the “fight-or-flight” response. In addition to these, Carrie helps the reader understand there are two other components: “freeze” and “fawn.” This book is an excellent resource for all because all have emotions.
Many people are afraid of emotions because they do not understand them. Unfortunately, no one fully understands emotions, but this book will help you plan for emotional upheavals and prepare responses to mental health crises. By going through the exercises, you will start to understand which coping mechanisms work and which are not working for you. While emotional counseling can be filled with technical terms, Carrie Vanderbilt uses easy-to-follow language that opens the door to understanding for all of us. I Don’t Know Why I Act Like This allows you to comprehend why you react and respond in certain ways and how to change negative patterns into positive ones. Read this book, apply grace to your actions, and start building a new and better life.
