I Didn't Want To Be That Girl! A Look Into the Life of Eve by Sue Allen is a brief women's Bible study that guides readers through a variety of life issues by holding them parallel to the first woman that walked the Earth, Eve. The study delves into a variety of issues that women face every day, from relationships to parenting to marriage, and shows how to grow spiritually through everyday life. Allen also uses her own life experiences and other scriptural quotes, along with historical knowledge of Biblical times, to help readers put things into context, and to understand how to apply it to modern life. Although this is marketed as an eight-week devotional for group study, I believe that it could also be great for private contemplation.
I thoroughly enjoyed this devotional. It's well written and well researched. I'm also impressed with Allen's honesty in sharing her own life experiences and struggles throughout the text. That's a refreshing change from many of the inspirational self help books currently on the shelves, where the writers (often preachers of large ministries) seem to be held on a spiritual level above their readers. While their advice is valuable, I feel that I Didn't Want to Be That Girl! was written by a "real" woman that's immersed in the trenches of life with her readers, and is speaking from experiences that we all have every day. I also like that she encourages readers to look up scriptures and to think about how it applies to each reader personally. It's not a general "one size fits all," but rather can be adapted to anybody in any life. Well done, Sue Allen! I wish you much success with this book!
