I Carry Your Heart in Mine: Creating a Meaningful Life After the Death of a Spouse by John F. Roskopf and Jill Schoeneman-Parker is a really good book. Based on John F. Roskopf’s real-life experience and written from his heart, he shares his journey from the death of his wife to finding a way to live meaningfully after the loss. The book starts with a preface in which a few disclaimers are stated so that readers know where John is coming from. It is then followed by 15 chapters, one of which is written by Jill Schoeneman-Parker.
Needless to say, life cannot be the same after the death of a spouse. Ironically, the more loving the couple is, it may be harder for the survivor to cope with life. This is why I Carry Your Heart in Mine by John F. Roskopf and Jill Schoeneman-Parker is such a valuable resource. The book is well-organized, written with loving emotion, and full of excellent advice. There is a quotation at the start of each chapter except the last. I really like these quotations as they are so meaningful. I Carry Your Heart in Mine covers many aspects of life, including the emotional in the chapter “Dating and Companionship”, the physical in the chapter “What to Do with All This Stuff”, and the spiritual in the chapter “The Power of Faith”. Then comes the last chapter, “A Personal Post Script: Thrival Skills”, which I consider as the best because it provides life skills for the survivors, not just to survive but thrive in life after a major loss. A highly recommended read to those who have and have not experienced the death of a spouse.
