Shirl has shortened her name from Shirley because she doesn’t like the letter ‘y.’ She doesn’t remember being born, so she believes she must be from somewhere out in space – an outer space alien. When she’s served creamed spinach and decides it smells “worse than paint,” she’s convinced she isn’t from planet Earth. But where is she from? A girl from outer space lands her spaceship and makes friends with Shirl. Her name is Eee-ahh and she is definitely an outer space alien. She even looks like one. The two girls bond with their common dilemma of not knowing what planet they are from.

Lois Wickstrom’s picture book story, I Am An Outer Space Alien, is a science fiction fantasy with a whole lot of fun and humor. The plot addresses every child’s curiosity about where they came from. Shirl is convinced she isn’t from Earth, and she manages to state valid points that suggest perhaps she’s right. She isn’t like the other children who play together outside; she prefers to make her own radios to communicate with other outer space aliens. When she does make a friend, it’s with Eee-ahh, a little girl from outer space. They instantly bond and they both realize that friendships are important, no matter what the differences are, and that you must be happy and proud of who you really are and who you’re meant to be. The language is simple for young readers to follow along and improve their reading skills. The illustrations are bright, bold, and colorful and help move the story forward.
