I was asked to review this book because of the way we Americans are killing ourselves with our intake of fast food, soda, and the amount of meat and diary we eat. The doctors and nutritionists on my radio show, Oprah and now Dr.Oz, have been encouraging us to eat less, drink more water, and eat more vegetables and fruit. Besides the bad effects meat has on making our bodies acidic, which results in digestive problems, joint inflammation, and is the best environment for cancer, the animals raised add more methane and Co2 to the environment than all of the cars and factories in the world. A statistic I find overwhelming. Even if it is blown up somewhat, it has to get us to rethink our food choices.
I thought Prasad was going to convince us to be vegetarians, but in what is more a long article than a book, he takes us on trips throughout the world as he learns about and enjoys foods unique to each culture. He does this with humor and a gusto for living that should whet anyone’s appetite for good food. Here are his last words that give a clear message of love and balance: “Food, irrespective of whether vegetarian or non-vegetarian, keeps us alive to achieve our ambitions. We are able to love our world, friends and family because of Food. Food is not just a plate of proteins, vitamins & carbohydrates to enrich our body. Food and the process of eating is the manifestation, of love, humanity and emotions. Don’t ever skip a meal because you are working, and never eat alone. After all, it is not just the food that is tasty.
At the end of the day, what is important is not what you ate. It is what you have become.”
