Lots of families have that pet dog that starts barking at every sound, but what about a family like Little Liz’s who have a tiny kitten, with the unusual name of Mouse, who meows incessantly? Oh, you have one of those kittens too? Then you’ll understand why after a while, the family gets into the habit of saying “Hush, Mouse!” I mean, when your kitten meows while you’re enjoying a TV show, or meows at your feet during breakfast, or worst of all, meows when everyone is trying to get to sleep, well, it sure can get annoying. But Mouse has an ally in Little Liz: they are both very small and they understand how each feels when being ignored. But the day arrives when Mouse’s meowing signals more than her need for food, attention or companionship. When she hears something in the kitchen that no-one else hears and her meows go ignored, it’s time to get Little Liz.
Hush Mouse is a short, delightful children’s story, beautifully illustrated by Alicia Young. The author of Hush Mouse, Becky Benishek, teaches everyone, including the adults, that when little ones speak or meow, listen! Thank heaven Little Liz listens to Mouse: together, they save the family from a small tragedy. The depictions of both Mouse, with her big ears, and Little Liz with her big eyes, are adorable. Becky Benishek is the author of several children’s books and this one will be a welcome addition to any book collection for young children. Perfect for young readers or for family reading fun together!
