Gary Turcotte is a prolific writer. I have read several of his books. His plots are always unique. They are character driven. I was quickly drawn into his latest book, Hurricane Jane.
Our narrator, Andy was Bruce’s younger brother. Bruce was born with MS and he’s his mother’s favorite. He fought hard to survive. Each morning he would swim, in the water he felt weightless. Lou is the oldest brother, his involvement in sports makes him their father’s favorite and their mother’s least.
Bruce lived life to its fullest. “Some people are afraid to die, others are afraid to live.” Bruce never seemed afraid to live. He was ready to try anything. His first time driving he hit a VW and left the scene. When Uncle Nick moved in with the family the escapades multiplied. Eventually Bruce and Andy moved out on their own. Bruce met Jane and things changed.
I’m not sure what to say about this novel. Andy was lost without Bruce. It was as though his life revolved around Bruce. After Bruce was gone, Andy’s life lost its luster. Turcotte once again pulled me into one of his tales.
