Hunter Down from the Roger and Suzanne Mystery Series is written by Jerold Last. While participating in a hunt test with her dog Romeo at a club, Suzanne, who has the unfortunate knack for discovering bodies, finds the body of Don Leone. The victim was an unpopular realtor with many enemies. Roger is asked by his friend, Sergeant Hightower in the local Sheriff’s Department, to assist in solving the murder and the victim’s widow also requests his help. Roger soon has his hands full following leads, while trying to understand how a hunt test works, and hires a former FBI agent to assist his investigation. The hunt tests keep Suzanne busy, but she makes a very valuable contribution to the case that has the Sheriff’s Department baffled.
Dog lovers will like reading Hunter Down by Jerold Last. The plot mainly focuses on hunt tests and provides in-depth information about the types of dogs that are used and how these entertaining tests are performed. It is not only the dogs who have to learn new tricks, but their owners too. The murder investigation is very suspenseful, mostly due to the fact that Roger and his team often find leads or do their planning during a hunt or over one of the tempting meals, which are often described. The story is moderately paced and very nicely written, and the cover illustration is very attractive and appropriate. Hunter Down is Book 12 from the Roger and Suzanne Mystery Series and I enjoyed reading it.
