In a uniquely drawn book about the history of the relationship between humans and dogs, Humans, Dogs, and Civilization by Elaine Ostrach Chaika is a book that any dog lover should definitely give a chance. Giving a different historical perspective on the development of dogs from the norm, this well thought out book explores the idea that dogs have not evolved from wolves as so many experts have espoused for years; they were unique and of themselves and, in fact, joined up with Stone Age hunters of their own volition and with their own gains in mind. The idea that dog and human brains are uniquely designed with receptors for communication, and that humans need dogs for their own survival and evolution is outlined and explained with great efficacy.

I very much enjoyed Humans, Dogs, and Civilization. The author has done a great job in writing this book in such a style that even non scientists and non geneticists can understand what is being explained, and Elaine Ostrach Chaika's theories seem not only possible, but probable. Any person who loves dogs will certainly relate to the idea that communication between the species is not unheard of and, if fact, probably happens on a daily basis. I recommend Humans, Dogs, and Civilization to any reader who loves to learn about dogs and the human-canine bond. I certainly hope that author Elaine Ostrach Chaika continues her work in this field. Her book was so interesting that I will be looking for more!
