He thought being a war hero would be the career for him, but an injury showed him how little regard others actually had for him, so Cayden wandered around being a bodyguard or doing other odd jobs. The urge to go home to his family was there in the back of his mind, but he never felt that he could live up to their expectations. Fate stepped in, taking the form of a young girl in need of protection and a place in the world, and the best place to provide all that for her was his hometown. How the Wraith Got His Soul Back by author Susan Ann Walker is the story of Cayden, the story of Daniella, and the story of Lee: three completely different people in different places, brought together to keep Daniella safe and deliver her to Cayden's family home and the House of Healers. The journey has its twists and turns and unexpected events, and we see the trio mature into a true team.
How the Wraith Got His Soul Back by Susan Ann Walker is an epic journey. The trio travels across the land in search of that safe place, which ends up being the very place Cayden had run from all those years ago. There are fantasy elements, epic travel, coming of age, growth, and development of the characters, just about everything you could want in a good book. There is the bad guy, the good guys, and the fear that maybe evil might triumph in the end, or will it? This is a story that could engage younger readers, older readers, and those in between. The time and place are part fantasy, yet the story is one to which everyone can relate and feel a real connection. What I found was a moving story of people doing the best they could, helping each other and being there for their friends, and making the most of life. This is definitely a story for readers of all ages. It has a feel-good quality that is much needed.
