Mwesi lived on the shores of Lake Bunyonyi in a tough yet contented way with her family. It wasn’t perfect, but it was perfect for her. However, one day, everything was destroyed and she was literally lost. Lost in a forest, she comes across a gorilla that seems to be looking at her. Instead of being afraid, the two of them develop a bond that not only helps her but the gorilla as well. Soon she finds a family that she never thought she would and she gets a chance at happiness that she deserves.
How Mwesi's New Friend Saved Both Their Lives by Kate Reschner is the perfect adventure story for children who want something interesting, while their parents want them to learn something new at the same time. The addition of pictures, the easy narrative and the way the story was told make it even more exciting. From the very first page, you learn about Mwesi and you connect with her. The novel has been segmented into four parts and somehow they foreshadow Mwesi’s growth. She starts her journey as a contented child who has learned to live with the hardships of life to a girl who is lost and alone. She then transitions into a child who finds a friend and then she becomes a girl who has found her place in which she is finally happy. Her growth and development were intense but very encouraging. This intense and gritty growth made this an incredible novel. Very entertaining!
