“I began to uncover information that led me to believe there was much more to her story than I’d ever heard from her directly,” opines Geri Spieler in the opening of Housewife Assassin. In September 1975, Sara Jane Moore attempted to assassinate President Gerald Ford. Her attempt was the second on Ford’s life in less than three weeks. The off-kilter relationship between Moore and Spieler began when Moore reached out for assistance in getting gifts for her young son. The association between the two would span three decades, with Moore maintaining a need for control. Moore wanted Spieler to tell her story, but only on her terms. Spieler’s attempts to clarify certain things led to Moore dissolving their connection. Spieler would rely on the voluminous correspondence between the two and in-depth research to tell the story of Moore and her wayward voyage into infamy.

Housewife Assassin is more than a mere snapshot biography and emerges as a remarkably accurate crime tale of a brilliant but troubled woman. If not for a defective weapon and an alert bystander who grabbed her, Sara Jane Moore, formerly Kahn, nearly changed history. Spieler well documents Moore’s life as she grows up in West Virginia but then attempts an escape in her teenage years. Unfortunately, Moore felt the spotlight needed to be on her, no matter where she went. This toxic narcissism figures throughout Moore’s trek from West Virginia to the west coast. The incredible information highlighted by Spieler includes the informant work done by Moore under the FBI’s infamous COINTELPRO program. The attempt on Ford’s life is the result, but the path taken to that September day is truly fascinating in its own regard. This a masterful piece of writing by Geri Spieler.
