"Horse Tales for the Soul" is a collection of short stories compiled by Bonnie Marlewski-Probert. The twelve stories vary in length and complexity so that the reader is treated to a myriad of events and opinions by those owning and riding horses. In the chapters, we learn that no matter how tough the going is, you need to follow your dreams and stick to the plan you have laid out for yourself and your horse. We see a horse who is lame and seemingly a candidate to be "put down," and yet, he thrives under tender loving care until he can be taken to shows. We see what the strength of love can do for both horses and their owners/riders.
I liked the chapter on how humor is oftentimes used when frustrations set in. It is a lesson that most of us would do well to learn. One of the most poignant stories has to do with saying good-bye to a beloved horse. The emotions will surely stir both horse owners and non-horse owners as the emotions are common to the human spirit in general. Another story is about a good-bye to a mother who dearly loved to ride. I think the only thing that I would like to have seen is perhaps a glossary of terms for those unfamiliar with horse-riding vocabulary. The stories are not sophisticated; rather, they are warm, loving and real stories that will stay with the reader for a while.
