Horse on the Loose: A Horse's Journey to Find True Love is a children's story by Leslie McDonald, with illustrations by Tanya Glebova. It follows the adventure of Quinn, a retired jumping horse who feels unappreciated because he does not get the same attention he used to. One day, his rider and owner, Dawn, informs him that she is going to college and leaving him in the care of Andy. Quinn feels abandoned, and when Andy refers to him as an old man, he does not find it endearing. Instead, it reminds him of his fellow retired horses sold off by their owners. So Quinn decides to take control of his destiny by running away to find love.
I loved reading Horse on the Loose because of its beautiful message. Quinn might be a horse, but his struggle is shared by many. The fear of being unwanted or abandoned is an issue that many people face. Leslie McDonald reminds us that when we take a moment to look around, we will find that love was there all along. Fortunately, this story does not only have sad scenes. Quinn's adventure has funny and chaotic moments. Tanya Glebova's illustrations bring these scenes to life, giving us visuals of Quinn's disastrous attempts to make new friends. It can be read as a bedtime story or an afternoon activity with your kids or grandchildren. It does not matter when or how you read it, but I recommend you add it to your children's reading collection because they will love it.
