Horace Won't Sing: Unless He Doesn't Have To is a children's picture book written by Barbara Roman, with illustrations by Vladimir Cebu. The story follows Horace, a small boy who makes strange noises in his room. His parents hear him and try to peek inside by standing at his door, climbing trees, and using various creative methods to discover what he is up to. When they find out that he has a secret talent for singing into a conch shell, they relax, thinking it’s a unique talent but nothing to worry about. However, the next day, they hear Horace singing with someone. Upon discovering he is singing with the shell, they become frantic. Could Horace be an alien, or does he possess a special talent that will delight his parents?
Horace Won't Sing is a whimsical story that teaches children about creativity and the importance of nurturing their talents. It combines imagination and humor to engage young readers. The unique relationship between Horace and his parents highlights the curiosity and playfulness of parenting. Horace is a level-headed child full of surprises, and many kids will enjoy getting to know him. The tale has a poetic rhythm and an unexpected plot twist that makes it memorable. It explores themes of family, belonging, privacy, acceptance, and the joy of self-expression. The colorful illustrations bring the story and characters to life. The narration is simple and clear, making it easy to understand, especially for children who are learning to read. I enjoyed this book and recommend sharing it with your children to spark their imagination and creativity.
