Hope in the Valley is a poignant and heartfelt personal expression of the power of faith and positivity to help overcome the overwhelming waves of grief that so many of us have the misfortune of dealing with. Having just lost a loved one recently, I was moved to read this book, if for no other reason than to see and feel another person’s journey through the unrelenting pain the loss of a loved one causes. Penelope Bourdillon peels back the curtain of her personal life to help others deal with their grief. Based on a total belief in God and His healing power and saving Grace, Bourdillon shares her thoughts along with scriptures that have helped her in her healing process.
Writing in a personal style, as if speaking to a friend who is suffering a personal loss, the pages of Hope in the Valley highlight the fact that God is always there for His people. Sharing her journey adds an intimacy that I found to be comforting, and I feel many others will draw consolation as well. With thoughtfulness and heartfelt words, she wraps the pages in expressions from God’s word in the Bible, such as when she shares the thought found in Psalms 34:18, where He assures us, “The Lord is close to the broken-hearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit.” With words that almost feel like a hug from a friend and God himself, Penelope Bourdillon leaves you feeling less alone in the tumultuous depths of grief.
