Hooter and The Hanukkah Miracle is a children's Jewish holiday and celebration book written by H.E. Kline. Jacob is a young snowy owl who's gotten very lost. It's cold and snowy, and Jacob is too tired and wet to fly any farther. As the sun is setting, Jacob notices a light in the distance and heads towards it. He flies right into the trunk of a large tree and falls to the ground. There's a large snowy owl in that tree: his name is Hooter, and though big and a bit intimidating at first, he welcomes the tiny owl into his nest in a hole in the tree. It's warm in there, and there's plenty of worms to be found in the nesting material for the now-hungry little bird. Jacob also sees the lights that guided him to the tree. There are eight of them, and their light flickers in the dark. Hooter tells Jacob how once he too was small and lost, and the lights guided him as well. The lights, he explains, glow only once a year for eight consecutive days during Hanukkah. Then Hooter tells Jacob the story of the Maccabees.

H.E. Kline's children's story, Hooter and The Hanukkah Miracle, is an outstanding retelling of the history of the Festival of Lights. The illustrations by AlexCreative are bold, brightly colored and a pleasure to look at while reading the text. Hooter is a marvelous teacher and friend for the lost, little owl. His warmth and kindness are themselves a glowing light, and his story about the lights, and the traditions and history of Hanukkah is beautifully told. Hooter and The Hanukkah Miracle made me smile while I was reading it, and then I realized I wanted to read it all over again. Kline's storytelling is inspired. The author brings the story and the traditions to a new generation in a most delightful and resonating way. Hooter and The Hanukkah Miracle is most highly recommended.
