Homecoming is a work of science fiction written for adults, and penned by author Brian L. Harad. The first book in The Unari Experiment series, this novel contains graphic violence, strong language and sexual situations. The plot centres on Byron Hollington, a seemingly normal human man who is pretty content with his life on Earth. When Byron discovers that he is, in fact, the son of the Queen of an alien race, left disguised as a human on Earth for his protection, things take a sudden turn for the worse. Transported away from all he’s ever known and given his true form, but none of its powers, so begins Byron’s ordeal at the hands of his own race.

Author Brian L. Harad has put a fascinating twist on the typical alien abduction tale and made it conspiratorial, exciting and deeply dramatic for poor Byron on every single page. The writing style is that of hard science fiction, with plenty of fluid worldbuilding and detailed depictions of the new world that Byron – aka Thundercloud – must learn to deal with. The dialogue is sharp and well penned to convey the difference between the captive’s still-human way of thinking, and the ways of the Unarians and the other species, Thunerians. The plot unfolds in unexpected ways, but it builds to a really satisfying conclusion once all the pieces of the mystery element come together. Overall, Homecoming is a highly original and entertaining work of science fiction suitable for adult fans of the alien sci-fi sub-genre.

Homecoming (The Unari Experiment) by Brian L Harad is a gripping sci-fi story. President of the United States, Harry Drummond is sinking in scandal but he has a way out – a unique trade agreement with two alien species, Unarians and Thunerians. They want only one thing – the Unari queen’s son, who was left behind 55 years ago. Byron Hollington is disguised as a human and has been raised by surrogates; he has no idea of who he really is. Then his life is changed forever when Drummond trades him for a new source of energy. Now called Thundercloud, Byron finds himself on a spacecraft with a crew of mythological beings, and his Unarian DNA has been activated. No longer human, he is a massive quadruped but his transformation has gone wrong; he doesn’t have the telekinetic powers and instincts Unarians are born with. Mentally, he is still a human being. How will he deal with the conspiracy he uncovers when he arrives at his new home?

Homecoming (The Unari Experiment) by Brian L Harad was an interesting book, a slightly different take on the standard sci-fi stories. It is graphic in places and there is explicit language but nothing that doesn’t fit in with the story and nothing you wouldn’t expect, given the circumstances. This is a well-written story, with lots of detail and plenty of description to help readers immerse themselves in the plot and I thought the addition of mythological creatures was quite unique to this genre. The characters are well-developed, well-rounded individuals in a story that has plenty of action, a few twists and turns and an unexpected ending which should lead neatly into book 2 in the series. Most enjoyable, recommended for any fans of sci-fi novels, especially if you like something just that little bit different.
