Hollywood Daze is a coming of age novel by Simona Moroni. The story takes us to Los Angeles, California where seventeen-year-old Mona Larvink has just moved after a few unfortunate events, such as being dumped by her boyfriend and being deserted by her parents. She turns to her older brother, Joost, an ambitious and slightly egotistical young man who is about to make it big as a Hollywood director. However, the escape she was looking for is nowhere in sight and the situation begins to feel unbearable because of her suffocating brother. Fortunately, it doesn’t end there. Mona makes new friends in whom she can find solace and will help her grow… and sometimes go to cemeteries with her. What? It’s just normal teen stuff!
My eyes immediately caught sight of the cover of Hollywood Daze, and its simple and sleek cover design was just too aesthetically pleasing for me not to pick up. Although I cannot say I can relate to the glamorous and edgy life of Mona Larvink, I did enjoy reading this book. Hollywood Daze is one of those books that is short enough to keep your attention and long enough to make an impact. Simona Moroni has such a way with words; effortlessly she describes for us the Hollywood which she envisions in her novel with just a few words: “Technicolor fed by darkness. Like this town.” I felt like I was sitting in a movie theater and watching a film when I was reading. I guess the title fits perfectly because I was bedazzled while I read Hollywood Daze. Overall, it was a great read!
